The exhibition “Arts & Science” reveals itself on closer inspection: it presents images from the micro world of scientific fundamental research at The Hamburg Centre for Ultrafast Imaging – wavelike shapes and color explosions, but also direct images recorded with electron microscopes. There is a lot of room for interpretation, and it is up to the observers to just let the beauty of the images sink in or to learn about the physics and chemistry behind the images from the accompanying texts in English and German.
“Arts & Science” is an initiative of the cluster of excellence. The members of CUI were asked to hand it aesthetically appealing pictures – regardless of their scientific significance or newsworthiness. A jury, which was joined in the beginning by a professor from the University of Fine Arts of Hamburg (HFBK), identified the final selection. The result is a pure aesthetic view on research in natural sciences.
"Arts & Science" was on display for the first time in the hallway of Hamburg City Hall from June 1 - 15, 2017. In 2023, the exhibition was revised and equipped with new scientific images and photos of laboratories and experiments. QR codes lead to videos in which researchers explain their work
