Functionalities are at the heart of the cluster of excellence „CUI: Advanced Imaging of Matter“. Atoms bind together and form solids, molecules interact and react - new functionalities emerge with increasing complexity and growing system size. 160 scientists from different disciplines such as physics, chemistry, and structural biology have joined forces to observe, understand, and control these processes. Thereby teams of Universität Hamburg cooperate with scientists of the Deutsche Elektronen-Synchrotron (DESY), the Max Planck Institute for the  Structure and Dynamics of Matter (MPSD), and the European XFEL GmbH (XFEL).

Exhibition addresses sexualized violence and false victim blaming

From 31 January to 23 February 2023, the Cluster of Excellence "CUI: Advanced Imaging of Matter" at Universität Hamburg will present the exhibition "What Were You Wearing?" at the Center for Free-Electron Laser Science on the Bahrenfeld campus. Already two years ago, the cluster board decided to specifically address the...

Researchers cast new light on magnons to verify topological phases in magnetic materials

Much recent research has focused on ‘topological’ materials – an intriguing type of solids which fall outside the standard classification into insulators and conductors. While their bulk is insulating, these phases are characterized by electrically conducting channels which appear at their edges. These resulting so-called...

How biomolecules react to UV light

A sophisticated experiment provides new insights into the ultrafast reaction of biomolecules when they are hit by energetic ultraviolet light in their natural environment. The team of Jochen Küpper, physics professor at Universität Hamburg and DESY scientist, recorded the light-induced processes taking place in a small...

Theoreticians discover why optical cavities curb the rate of chemical reactions

Chemical processes are all around us. From novel materials to more effective medicines or plastic products – chemical reactions play a key role in the design of the things we use every day. Scientists constantly search for better ways to control these reactions, for example to develop new materials. Now an international...

Research into new antibiotics in the Heisenberg Programme

Dr. Henning Tidow has been accepted into the Heisenberg Programme of the German Research Foundation (DFG). He will conduct research from 1 March 2023 as part of a Heisenberg position in the Department of Chemistry at Universität Hamburg. From 2014 until 2022 he led a research group as a junior professor at the Cluster of...

For the freedom of science

100 years ago, the "Notgemeinschaft der Deutschen Wissenschaft" was founded - later it became the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG). It finances research projects that "arise purely from the needs of science itself and make possible what is embodied in the Basic Law: the freedom of science". The Cluster "CUI: Advanced Imaging of Matter" is funded by DFG within the Excellence Strategy of the Federal and State Governments. www.dfg2020.de/en
