Functionalities are at the heart of the cluster of excellence „CUI: Advanced Imaging of Matter“. Atoms bind together and form solids, molecules interact and react - new functionalities emerge with increasing complexity and growing system size. 185 scientists from different disciplines such as physics, chemistry, and structural biology have joined forces to observe, understand, and control these processes. Thereby teams of Universität Hamburg cooperate with scientists of the Deutsche Elektronen-Synchrotron (DESY), the Max Planck Institute for the  Structure and Dynamics of Matter (MPSD), and the European XFEL GmbH (XFEL).

Laser for fusion

The German Federal Ministry for Research, Technology and Space (BMFTR) announced funding for a hub for laser fusion, with sites in Hamburg/Schleswig-Holstein and Hesse. European XFEL will be at the heart of a fusion R&D campus Hamburg/Schleswig-Holstein. The campus will serve as the center of German laser fusion research...

Mechanical strain creates chirality

Mechanical strain is one of the most common tools used to tailor the properties of materials. In piezoelectric materials, stretching or compressing a crystal generates an electrical polarization. In piezomagnetic materials, it induces magnetization. Researchers at the Max Planck Institute for the Structure and Dynamics of...

Ultrafast X-ray flashes heal the damage they cause

The interaction between X-rays and matter can be actively controlled: an international research team led by the University of Hamburg and SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory has succeeded in producing bright X-ray images that come with significantly less damage. In Nature Communications, the researchers report the use of...

Video insights into the beauty of nanoparticle research

When Sarodi Jonak Dutta enters the lab, gold, silver and copper are placed on the table. These metals can be synthesized into tiny structures with unique properties: they self-assemble into supercrystals. It is this research, and its potential to reduce dependence on fossil resources, that led Sarodi to Hamburg and to the...

Video insights into research on new functionalities of matter

Shooting lasers at matter to find answers to unsolved questions. For Kai-Fu Wong, this is everyday life in the lab. His specialty is ultrashort pulses in the attosecond and femtosecond range, which allow for particularly precise investigation of states of matter. At the Bahrenfeld campus in Hamburg, he especially values the...

For the freedom of science

More than 100 years ago, the "Notgemeinschaft der Deutschen Wissenschaft" was founded - later it became the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG). It finances research projects that "arise purely from the needs of science itself and make possible what is embodied in the Basic Law: the freedom of science". The Cluster "CUI: Advanced Imaging of Matter" is funded by DFG within the Excellence Strategy of the Federal and State Governments. www.dfg.de/en
