Functionalities are at the heart of the cluster of excellence „CUI: Advanced Imaging of Matter“. Atoms bind together and form solids, molecules interact and react - new functionalities emerge with increasing complexity and growing system size. 160 scientists from different disciplines such as physics, chemistry, and structural biology have joined forces to observe, understand, and control these processes. Thereby teams of Universität Hamburg cooperate with scientists of the Deutsche Elektronen-Synchrotron (DESY), the Max Planck Institute for the  Structure and Dynamics of Matter (MPSD), and the European XFEL GmbH (XFEL).

Biological specimens imaged with X-rays without damage

A pollen grain showing the nanofoam within or a diatom with the individual geometric structures inside clearly visible: Using high-energy X-rays from the PETRA III synchrotron light source at DESY, a team led by Saša Bajt and Henry Chapman has managed to image these structures without damaging them. Their new technique...

Researchers combine techniques to analyze glass transition

During the transition from the liquid to the solid glass state, a special state forms at the atomic level between a disordered liquid and a crystalline solid. A DESY research team led by Felix Lehmkühler, who also conducts research in the Cluster of Excellence "CUI: Advanced Imaging of Matter", has now presented a new...

For the freedom of science

100 years ago, the "Notgemeinschaft der Deutschen Wissenschaft" was founded - later it became the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG). It finances research projects that "arise purely from the needs of science itself and make possible what is embodied in the Basic Law: the freedom of science". The Cluster "CUI: Advanced Imaging of Matter" is funded by DFG within the Excellence Strategy of the Federal and State Governments. www.dfg2020.de/en
