Public Outreach
Public relations work in the cluster is based on networked thinking combined with a target-group-specific approach that is basically aimed at a broad public. The challenge here is that the topics of basic research in chemistry, physics and structural biology tend to be more difficult to communicate and are associated with fear of contact. It is therefore important to lower the inhibition threshold and make research tangible.

Exhibits, Events, Film
- "Knowledge on Tap" is an evening in which up to 50 researchers talk about their research simultaneously in Hamburg bars and pubs.
- The "Arts & Science" exhibition features images from CUI research that provide an aesthetic approach to basic research. The exhibition has resulted in several photo calendars, postcards, and a film that is shown at high-profile events.
- Participation in the Night of Knowledge/Open Day, Summer of Knowledge, Girls' Day, Children's University, XFEL Open Day. Supervision of (international) visiting groups.
- Presentation at trade fairs (APS Meeting, Hannover Messe).
- A creative short film about the cluster ran for several weeks in Hamburg art house cinemas.
- The sound exhibit "Unit Cell" provides access to the research field of crystallography and complements, among others, events of the physics school lab Light & Schools.
Mildred Dresselhaus: Prize and Magazine
- The Mildred Dresselhaus Magazine profiles outstanding international female scientists who have been awarded the Mildred Dresselhaus Guest Professorship by the Cluster. The prize has been awarded annually to one junior and one senior awardee since 2013.
- During their six-month research stay, the awardees serve as important role models and mentors for junior scientists (networking events, lectures, mentoring).
- The program was awarded the UHH Gender Equality Prize in 2018. With the prize money, an interdisciplinary conference on natural sciences and career topics was held in 2019.
- In 2018, the program was included in the DFG toolbox as a "Best Practice" example.
Cluster News and Cluster Homepage
- The "CUI News" magazine is distributed throughout Germany in print.
- Current news articles are published on the cluster homepage, on the social media channels (Twitter/Instagram/LinkedIn) and as a press releases.
- Almost all texts also appear on the MIN homepage and - depending on the topic - on the physics and chemistry subpages, in the physics newsletter and, if applicable, in the UHH newsroom.
