Imaging of Matter
Presentation of the Mildred Dresselhaus Prize 2024
19 December 2024
The winners of the 2024 Mildred Dresselhaus Prize have expressed their gratitude for the award in very moving words. Prof. Sonia Coriani from the Technical University of Denmark and Dr. Laura Cattaneo from the Max Planck Institute for Nuclear Physics in Heidelberg were honored by the Cluster of Excellence "CUI: Advanced Imaging of Matter".
Prof. Sonia Coriani particularly appreciates the collaborative nature of the Mildred Dresselhaus Program. She has already worked a lot with the 2017 awardee, Prof. Anna Krylov, and is very much looking forward to getting to know other Mildred Dresselhaus awardees and expanding her network. The senior laureate specializes in the development of rigorous and highly accurate electronic-structure methods to simulate steady-state and time-resolved spectroscopy across different frequency regimes, in particular soft X-ray, and their application for the interpretation of cutting-edge experimental studies on molecular systems using advanced light sources.
Sonia Coriani gave insights into her research, but also emphasized how pleased she was to see Prof. Olga Smirnova in the audience. She is another example of the fantastic female scientists that the program brings to Hamburg.
Junior prizewinner Dr. Laura Cattaneo is an expert for the assembly and characterization of liquid crystal samples, the development of liquid crystal flat jets, the generation of high harmonics, and time resolved THz dynamics in liquid crystals. In the spirit of Mildred Dresselhaus, who campaigned for the interests of women in the natural sciences throughout her life, she made a passionate plea in favor of diversity, as not all barriers have been broken down. She said she felt very honored to be able to accept an award that bears the name of this outstanding personality. She also gave an in-depth insight into her research.
Prof. Robin Santra, in whose working group Coriani will be conducting research, and Cluster spokesperson Prof. Francesca Calegari, together with Prof. Angel Rubio, who has accompanied Cattaneo professionally for a long time, spoke as laudators.
After the award ceremony, the numerous guests had the opportunity to talk to the prizewinners for a long time. Thanks to the on-site childcare, everyone was able to enjoy the food and the festive atmosphere.
