Prof. Nina Rohringer has been selected as a fellow of the American Physical Society (APS). The APS Division for Atomic, Molecular, and Optical Physics (DAMOP) nominated Rohringer to be recognised for her outstanding theoretical concepts in the new research area of nonlinear X-ray research and experiments at X-ray free-electron lasers.
Nina Rohringer is a leading scientist at DESY, a professor at Universität Hamburg and a principal investigator in the Cluster of Excellence "CUI: Advanced Imaging of Matter". With her research group, “Theory of ultrafast X-ray physics”, she studies the fundamental processes of the interactions of matter and ultrashort X-ray pulses of high intensity produced by free-electron lasers. This involves among other activities the development of novel experiments at X-ray free-electron lasers (XFELs) as well as new types of X-ray lasers themselves.
“I feel very honoured to be taken into the circle of APS Fellows,” Rohringer says about the award. “My thanks go to my group, colleagues, and mentors, who share my excitement for nonlinear processes with X-rays and who have significantly contributed to the great successes in this research field.”
With more than 50 000 members, the American Physical Society is the second largest physics society in the world, after the German Physical Society (DPG). Scientists who make extraordinary contributions to research or who have produced important research or technological developments can be selected as Fellows. This prestigious honour is bestowed every year on at most a half of a percent of the APS full members, currently standing at 250. Text: DESY, ed.
