The pandemic is putting a strain on the mental health of many. To provide support in the situation, the Cluster offers two webinars on mental health that were specifically tailored for people working in the academic environment.
Participants will have the chance to develop cognitive strategies, work and lifestyle habits that will improve their psychological wellbeing and eventually their productivity during the pandemic. The courses will be conducted by neuroscientist and psychologist Dr. Desiree Dickerson. They are open for all members of the clusters "CUI: Advanced Imaging of Matter" and "Quantum Universe".
Strategies for managing our mental health & well-being during COVID times
The webinar will explore the experiences of graduate students and other young researchers trying to successfully navigate their work while the world is confronted with a pandemic. The need to set a solid foundation for mental health will be discussed as well as how to identify first signs of stress. Participants will learn how to de-escalate thoughts, sensations, and emotions.
This webinar is specifically tailored to researchers in the earlier career stages but anyone interested can join since the underlying principles and techniques can generally be helpful to more senior researchers as well.

Isolation & Belonging
Academic life can be an isolating experience. For many, the role requires you to live far from home which is particularly challenging in a time where travel has become extremely difficult. The workload demands can also lead to difficulties in maintaining relationships and reaching a healthy level of social exchange. The webinar explores some of the many sources of isolation and loneliness that are a part of a scientist’s reality and why this is so bad for us.
