One of the two projects awarded this year's Equal Opportunity Prize: “Dreh meinen Film” at the CUI Cluster of Excellence.

Every year, the University of Hamburg presents an award for gender equality on campus. This year, the Academic Senate has selected two high-profile projects for the award.

The University of Hamburg’s Equal Opportunity Prize presented annually for outstanding, visible, and sustainable commitment to gender equality initiatives at the University of Hamburg. It is endowed with 10,000 euros and honors individual members, groups of members, or organizational units of the university that have contributed in an exemplary manner to the constructive handling of diversity and have sustainably strengthened the university’s development in terms of heterogeneity and justice.

The two projects honored in 2026 are:

Project “Dreh meinen Film”

The Cluster of Excellence “CUI: Advanced Imaging of Matter” invites girls aged 12 to 15 with an interest in the natural sciences to Science City Hamburg Bahrenfeld. There, the participants can meet female scientists and shoot their own mini-documentaries about them.

An agency specializing in film provides the necessary tools for the shoot. The girls learn how the camera works, which locations are suitable for filming, and what questions to ask. In the process, they gain insights into everyday life at the university. The competition entry was submitted by CUI Managing Director Anika Ostermaier-Grabow.

“Outstanding Women” Project

The “Outstanding Women in International, European, and Constitutional Law” project is an initiative by young researchers and students who have set out to highlight the work of outstanding female legal scholars and raise awareness of their significant contributions to international, European, and constitutional law within both national and international legal scholarship. To this end, they are publishing a calendar featuring 12 portraits with images, quotes, and brief descriptions of notable women. The project aims to help identify the structures that hinder the visibility and recognition of women’s work in legal scholarship—as well as ways to break through these structures. The project was submitted by Franziska Bachmann and Verena Kahl.

The call for nominations for the 2027 Equal Opportunity Prize is expected to be issued in the fall of 2026. Proposals and applications may be submitted via email to chancengerechtigkeit@uni-hamburg.de.
