„Honorary Medal“ awarded to Roland Wiesendanger

On 14 May 2019, physicist Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. Roland Wiesendanger of Universität Hamburg has been presented the „Honorary Medal De Scientia et Humanitate Optime Meritis“ by the Czech Academy of Sciences in Prag. The award honors Wiesendanger's scientific merits and groundbreaking works in the field of spin-polarized scanning tunneling microscopy and magnetic phenomena at the atomic scale.
The Czech Academy of Sciences is the most important non-university research institute in Czechia. It is devoted to basic science and applied science. The medal was established in 1995 to recognize extraordinary scientists for their meritorious contributions in the area of science and humanitarian ideas. Previous recipients from Germany include the winner of the Nobel Prize in physics, Professor Theodor Hänsch, and the former Director General of CERN, Professor Rolf-Dieter Heuer.
